At Brown Paper Fox, we’re passionate about publishing beautifully crafted, meaningful children’s books with heart, whimsy, and purpose. We welcome submissions from Canadian authors and illustrators who are equally passionate about storytelling and want to bring their books to life with an indie publisher that values collaboration, creativity, and clarity.

We currently offer two distinct publishing models: traditional royalty-based and creator-subsidised hybrid publishing. Both models include professional editing, book design, distribution, and promotional support, but differ in the structure of compensation and production responsibilities.

What We’re Looking For

We are currently accepting:

  • Picture books (ages 0–8)
  • Board books
  • Non-fiction picture books with a strong narrative voice
  • Select early readers and illustrated chapter books

We are not currently accepting middle grade, YA, poetry collections, or books that do not align with our publishing mandate.

We love books that:

  • Feature fresh, imaginative narratives
  • Centre diverse voices and lived experiences
  • Are driven by compelling characters and authentic emotional journeys
  • Have commercial potential while staying true to a clear artistic vision

 

Our Publishing Model

Brown Paper Fox covers all production costs (editing, design, printing, marketing), and the author receives:

  • 10–25% royalties on net revenues (based on format)
  • 10 complimentary copies
  • Opportunity to purchase additional books at 50% off MSRP
  • There are no fees to the author in this model.

How to Submit

Illustrators: We welcome portfolios and samples, especially for picture books, board books, or early readers. Please include a link to your portfolio or attach a PDF under 10MB.

We do not accept AI-generated or AI-assisted manuscripts or illustrations.

Please note: We aim to respond to all submissions within 8–12 weeks, but during busy seasons it may take longer. We are a small but mighty team and truly appreciate your patience.
